  • Mom’s Morning Cleanse

    YIELD: 1½ CUPS / 350 ML
NOTE: Eat the fenugreek seeds that drift to the bottom of the mug at the end—they will be soft by then. I keep a spoon in the cup to stir as I go in case the turmeric settles. My mother insists that the pinch of sugar boosts your brain activity in the morning. If you’re feeling really ambitious, do as I do and add a couple pieces of dried amla (Indian gooseberry) to give you a vitamin C boost, too.

I always give credit where it is due, and this recipe is my mother’s. She has been making us drink this concoction for years—despite our protests. I finally listened and tried it in my own home. Now, my husband and I are addicted. Drink it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and you’ll flush your liver of toxins with the lemon juice, boost your immune system with the turmeric, boost your metabolism with the red chile powder, and help suppress your appetite with the fenugreek seeds.

    • Juice of 1 small lemon (fresh is best)
    • ¼–½ teaspoon turmeric powder
    • /¼ teaspoon red chile powder or cayenne pepper
    • ½–1 teaspoon dried fenugreek seeds
    • Pinch of raw cane sugar, such as Sucanat (optional)
    • 1½ cups /350 mL boiling water

    1. Combine all the ingredients in the order listed above in a large mug. Stir well and drink up.
